What is lifetime cover?
Lifetime cover, also referred to as lifelong, is the most comprehensive type of pet health policy. Each year your vet fees benefit is renewed to it’s original balance so that you always have money to spend on veterinary treatments.
For instance, if you have a cover up to £6,000 per year and you spend £5,000 in year 1, when you renew you will get another £6,000 in year 2. What’s more, because you always have money available, ongoing medical conditions are covered year on year for as long as you stay with the same provider, therefore providing cover for the lifetime of your pet.
Other types of policy claim to cover ongoing conditions but really your vet fees allowance is calculated per condition. So once you spend your allowance on a condition, it then becomes excluded and no further claims can be made.
Get cheap lifetime pet insurance
There are only a handful of companies providing lifetime policies. However they don’t always come cheap. That’s why we’ve shortlisted the insurers that give the best value for money.
Argos pet insurance: they’re probably one of the most competitive providers around. Lifetime is provided only with the Platinum cover but with up to £7,500 in vet fees per year and low excess.
Homebase pet insurance: affordable prices and different cover levels for cats and dogs, all lifelong. They also offer great online discounts (see table below)
Aviva pet insurance: They only recently relaunched their pet cover and you’ll have a choice of 3 lifetime policies. Online discount and multipet discount available too.
Avoid Petplan if you’re looking for low cost cover
Although Petplan is UK’s number one insurer and has good reputation for paying out claims, premiums have rocketed over the last few year. Premiums can often be double what other lifetime companies offer, nothing than can be justified as far as service is concerned.
